Program and Benefits of Italy Residency

The Italy Investor Visa Program is a residency scheme designed for non-EU/EEA/Swiss nationals seeking legal residence in Italy through capital investment.

Launched in 2017, the program was part of Italy’s broader strategy to attract foreign direct investment and boost innovation, entrepreneurship, and economic growth. Since its inception, the program has welcomed global investors looking to gain access to Italy and the wider European Union.

Applicants who qualify receive a 2-year residence permit, renewable for 3 additional years, without any physical stay requirement. The process is streamlined and efficient, with most applications processed within 3 to 4 months.

The visa provides a structured route to long-term settlement. After five years of continuous residence, applicants become eligible to apply for permanent residency. Italian citizenship can be pursued after ten years of legal residence, and dual citizenship is allowed under Italian law.

Program Requirements

To obtain the Italian Investor Visa, applicants must be non-EU/EEA/Swiss citizens with a clean criminal record and choose one of the qualifying investment options.

Applications must be submitted through Italy’s official online portal, with all applicants subject to due diligence and background checks. Notably, the investment is only required after preliminary approval has been granted by the authorities.

The program offers access to Italy’s high standard of living, world-class healthcare and education, and visa-free travel across the Schengen Zone, all without any obligation to relocate.

FAQs

The Italy Golden Visa program, also known as the “Investor Visa for Italy,” was introduced in 2017 to boost foreign direct investment. The program enables high-net-worth non-EU citizens to establish a presence in Italy through economic investments or philanthropic donations.

Italy does not offer direct citizenship by investment. However, investors may apply for citizenship after 10 years of holding the Golden Visa, subject to meeting eligibility criteria such as physical presence (183 days per year), language proficiency, and integration.

The Italy Golden Visa (Investor Visa) allows non-EU citizens to obtain residency through an investment ranging from €250,000 to €2,000,000 in Italian startups, companies, government bonds, or philanthropic projects. Applicants must be at least 18 years old, have a clean criminal record, and provide proof of legally obtained funds. The visa grants a two-year residency, renewable upon expiration, with the option to apply for Italian citizenship after 10 years.

The Italy Residency by Investment program allows successful applicants and their families to live, work, and study in Italy, enjoying one of Europe’s most vibrant lifestyles. Holders benefit from visa-free travel across the entire Schengen Zone, access to Italy’s high-quality healthcare and education, and the ability to invest in Italian businesses or real estate. Residency is renewable, and after meeting legal requirements, it can lead to permanent residency or Italian citizenship, offering long-term security and enhanced global mobility.

Foreign investors must meet specific criteria to be eligible for the Italian Golden Visa by investment:
* Be at least 18 years old
* Be non-EU/EEA/Swiss Citizens
* Have no criminal record or pending charges
* Proven ability to make investments
* Documented source of funds that comply with anti-money laundering regulations
* Bank statements or official letters from financial institutions confirming fund availability
* Declared intention to make the required investment within 3 months of entering Italy
* Willingness to maintain the investment for the minimum required period
* Compliance with all reporting requirements related to the investment

The Italy Golden Visa provides different investment thresholds based on the selected investment option. The minimum investment to become a Golden Visa holder in Italy starts from €250,000 and would reach up to €2 million.

Investors who choose to reside in Italy can apply for permanent residency after 5 years and may become eligible for Italian citizenship after 10 years, provided all legal requirements are met.

The investment options for the Italy Golden Visa are as follows:

  • €250,000 investment in an Italian innovative startup
  • €500,000 investment in an Italian limited company
  • €2 million investment in Italian government bonds
  • €1 million donations to a philanthropic initiative in Italy

The initial Italy Golden Visa residence permit is valid for two years and must be renewed before expiration. Investors are required to submit their renewal application at least 60 days prior to the current permit’s expiry.

The renewal process mirrors the initial application: investors must compile the required documents, submit the application, complete fingerprinting, and receive a new residence permit card. Upon approval, the renewed permit is issued with a three-year validity, allowing continued residence, work, and study in Italy.
